Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer where malignant cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers many of the body's internal organs. Between 1940 and 1979, approximately 27.5 million people were exposed to asbestos. Since 1973 and 1984, there has been a threefold increase in the diagnosis and treatment of this illness. While working with asbestos is the major risk factor associated, mesothelioma can also be exposed by indirect contact.
Some of the symptoms associated with Mesothelioma are:
- Chest wall pain
- Pleural effusion or fluid surrounding the lungs
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue or anemia
- Wheezing, hoarseness or cough
- Blood in the sputum coughed up
Symptoms of mesothelioma can appear 20-50 years after exposure. Asbestos was known, but not commercially used until the late 1800's. While being widely used in many industrial products, it was also used in cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles and insulation. The first lawsuits against asbestos manufactures began in 1929. Since then, many more lawsuits have been filed for negligence in implementing safety measures after the effects of asbestos, asbestosis, and mesothelioma became known. The liability from manufactures and the number of lawsuits are currently in the billions. If you think that you have been exposed to asbestos and are starting to show symptoms, Contact Simien & Simien, LLC today.
